Thursday, 17 April 2008
Australian actress Cate Blanchett’s and her writer-director husband, Andrew Upton, have put paintings by two noted New Zealand artists up for sale.
A private collector from Melbourne paid $A780,000 ($NZ937,000) for Iron Bark by New Zealander Rosalie Gascoigne, The Australian newspaper reported.

Noughts and Crosses 7, painted by Auckland artist Colin McCahon, was passed in for $A260,000 - $A20,000 below its estimate.

Auctioneer Chris Deutscher said Blanchett and Upton’s decision to sell was part of an upgrading and expansion of their collection.

“They own both artists in depth and they are looking to acquire new work, particularly by young artists,” he said.
